Background

NRIGA Secretariat commits to provide the professional networking opportunities, trade missions, business advisory services, networking meet-ups, etc. We thank our NRI leaders to be part of the NRIGA forum. According to the resolution, taken at the NRIGA In – Person meet, on November 16, 2022 at Hyderabad, India, it was decided by the NRIGA members that in order to keep the voluntary network moving, the members shall contribute and support with USD 250 for the following as an advancement towards expenditure on social networking of members of NRIGA to include hosting of events, secretarial work, etc. The programmes shall be communicated to the members through email and also be uploaded in the website.

BROADER DEFINITION OF NON RESIDENT INDIAN (NRI) – NRI is defined under FEMA as a person resident outside India who is either a citizen of India or is a Person of Indian Origin (PIO).

1. An NRI is an individual who is of Indian origin residing abroad or

  • who is an Indian Citizen who resides in India for less than one hundred & eighty two days during the course of the preceding financial year, or
  • who has gone out of India or who stays outside India for the purpose of employment, or who has gone out of India or who stays outside India for carrying on business or vocation outside India, or
  • who has gone out of India or who stays outside India for any other purpose indicating his intention to stay outside India for an uncertain period.

 

2. PIO stands for Person of Indian Origin. A citizen of a foreign country (other than a citizen of Bangladesh or Pakistan) is a PIO if

  • he/ she at any time held an Indian passport; or
  • he/ she or either of his/ her parents or eitherany of his/ her grandparents was a citizen of India; or
  • he/ she is a spouse (not being a citizen of Bangladesh or Pakistan) of an Indian citizen.
